“So let us reflect on what is truly of value in life, what gives meaning to our lives, and set our priorities on the basis of that. The purpose of our life needs to be positive. We weren’t born with the purpose of causing trouble, harming others. For our life to be of value, I think we must develop basic good human qualities-warmth, kindness, compassion. Then our life becomes meaningful and more peaceful-happier.”
― Dalai Lama XIV, The Art of Happiness
Being the rose-coloured glasses Pollyanna that I am, I embrace the different, the alternate, the unique. Choosing to approach this world with a compassionate spirit, not a combative one. For me, the world is never so bleak as some would make it.
Though, looking yonder, over the border to the U.S. I see a nation that has almost made compassion a dirty word. Where once a people prided themselves on their generous spirit, now urge the suffering of others, as though it be their due for not being the same as them?
Prosecuting others based solely upon their beliefs? Are all men created equal under the law? Ring any bells yet? Seemingly not.
If nothing less, Americans are masters at reinventing themselves. Experts at re-furnishing their values, demeanor, and morality based on a lemming mentality.
It is a slippery slope when we begin to remake the rules to suit our present needs alone. The rise of Trump in the U.S. should not come as a shock to anyone. The U.S. has danced to the drums of war for so long, that they have failed to see the rape and pillaging of their rights and freedoms that once made them great.
There is a wound in the side of the American Dream.
Since 2001, The U.S. has become a nation of fear mongers, afraid even of their OWN shadows. Seeing bogey men around every corner, believing everyone is out to nab their bag of candy. Acting as though no nation on earth has EVER experienced TERROR. Least not as they experienced it. Rocked to their very foundations, and all that jazz.
I have to wonder, though, who does this fear serve? Who benefits from a nation afraid of its own shadows? Who profits from freedoms being dismissed to protect, and rights ignored in favour of controlling and monitoring the masses to keep out the bogey-men. Who?
You can hear the collective intake of breath at their need to Make America Great Again.
If we choose to miss the significance of Trump, and what it is the American people find attractive in him, we fail to recognize basic human reactions in the face of panic, crisis, and terror.
It is a response to conflict that resounds throughout history. It is the need of the people to gravitate to those who shine brighter than the rest, and lead through sheer force of will. When it is felt that leadership is weakened, the people will, and do, gravitate to those who are prepared to lead, regardless of what they are leading them towards.
Fear mongering has always smelled of deceit, and a deep down wish to dictate. Fear serves to control the minds of the many. Like a caped hero, Trump swoops in to save the people from the tyrannical quagmire that has become Washington D.C. Promising to save the day, and the way of the American people.
And who better they believe, then a man who has built up his own empire? Who better to lead theirs, as he can not be swayed by cash, or so the populous believe.
Yet it is not cold hard cash alone that rules the world. Power may be got by great sums of money, but not necessarily maintained. Empires may be built, but eventually, they become too small and some want more.
These I believe are the things Trump most desires. And, so, he stirs the cauldrons of fear, adding spice and his robust personality to the mix. His wish to shock and awe is a great attraction to the American mindset. They love bright shiny things. The glitz and glamour of a world most of them will never, ever see is highly attractive. Morality, values, freedom, knowledge, compassion, kindness are of far, far less value today in the U.S.
Funny how the very thing they most desire for themselves, is the very thing that man can never give them. As, it is something they already have, if only they would just look.
